Central Auditory Processing Evaluation

boy with headphonesThe processes of the auditory system involves a complex combination of stages that auditory information must go through in order for a child to make sense of auditory information and respond to it.  In most children this happens naturally as they grow and develop. In some children, however, the auditory system may have been compromised by medical, environmental, developmental, or even physiological complications preventing it from performing effectively.

Central Auditory Processing
The ability of the auditory system to efficiently process auditory information for understanding and utilization. This includes our ability to use what we hear in a classroom as well as in everyday life.

Presenting Symptoms
The most common academic difficulties noted in children with Central Auditory Processing Disorders are persistent difficulty in the areas of reading, spelling, comprehension, distractibility, following directions, and effective language use. Other symptoms may also present in combination with these, although not all children with an auditory processing disorder have all of the same symptoms.

boy's earDiagnostic Test Protocol
Most of the children tested have been referred for testing due to persistent difficulties in school. Diagnostic test protocol is designed to target the auditory processes individually as well as examine the effect of each of these processes on the function of the entire system. Initial test sessions are scheduled for two hours with additional sessions scheduled as needed on an individual basis.

The test battery covers the auditory processes and their function as they relate to processing of the auditory information received. A comprehensive report is provided which details the tests used, the results, and an overall interpretation related to the academic difficulties reported as well as additional possible difficulties. Specific areas of deficit are defined in order to provide the parent, physician, and/or professional with suggested focal areas for intervention and/or further investigation.

Therapy/Auditory Intervention
Following diagnosis of a Central Auditory Processing Disorder, referral for intervention is made. In some instances, auditory is provided on-site at NJ HHC. The intervention is provided on a case by case review of the specific auditory processes causing difficulty. Auditory therapy is provided using one on one instruction as well as specifically designed computer programs for intervention.
